Dancing Inmates - Only in the Philippines!

August 2, 2007

I wrote an entry last week about my trip to Correctional Mandaluyong for Women with PBB Season 2 housemates Mickey Perz, Gee-Ann Abrahan and Bodie Cruz. It was a fun and fulfilling experience. I've longed to lurk inside a correctional since 4th year high school because of the script i've been writing for years and because of that experience, i can finally have a realistic ending to my masterpiece.

Just last Saturday, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho made a feature about the 1,500 plus CPDRC inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines.

Mga barumbado at tigasin mapapasayaw mo? Impossible!

Pero naging posible! Thanks to Byron F. Garcia (who is currently the 4th Most Viewed Channel in Youtube - imagine the millions of videos uploaded at youtube from different parts of the world and a pinoy ranked 4th!) for coming up with a brilliant idea. The group is presently having millions of audience via youtube and they are best known for their own remake of Micheal Jackson's 1983 smash hit "Thriller".

Some of their stellar performances include their own version of Jumbo Hotdog, Dayang-Dayang and I will follow him (theme from the movie Sister Act).

Interesting tidbit: The two lead stars of the Thriller video were both jailed because of prohibited drugs. Both of them were former dancers and have renewed their self-confidence when they found out that they're having a huge following not only in the Philippines, but in the whole wide world.

When the feature from the show ended, I had a huge smile on my face. It made me realize that discipline and determination inside the prison can make the Filipinos proud. I would love to see them perform live in Araneta.

Yun ata ang imposible :D

Very innovative way of rehabilitating inmates. Kudos to the very open-minded warden.

I hope they make this into a movie, I would love to know the long journey that the warden, guards, the choreographer, and the inmates took to get to this place now, where they seem to work well together. Marami ding maiinspire dito.

Schumey&Girlie - I hope to see more openminded wardens here in the Philippines. They should be given proper credit for a job well done.

Sassymoon- That’s a great idea! I hope an independent filmaker based in Cebu will take the courage to transform this into a movie.
