Remembering The Girl Power Bands of The 90’s

I grew up listening to pop stars such as Micheal Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul and my childhood hero, Madonna. I was a Channel V kid way back and I would rather watch Music Videos than stick to the usual Cartoon Shows available on local stations (Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network was not born during that time).

When I was in Elementary, Boybands were a hit. Everyone wants a piece of Ronan Keating and the Boyzone, Everyone wants to get down with Nick Carter and the Backstreet Boys, Everyone thinks of Justin Timberlake and the rest of N'Sync and it drives them crazy! In short, Boybands were really HOT during that time. 

It was also in this era that Girl Bands became a hit too. A girlband usually comprises of 3-5 sexy girls who can sing and dance and write their own stuff and do their own choreography. They should also make an extra effort to be "controversial".

For now, I'll be posting my Top 5 favorite girl bands in the 90's including their music videos:

SPICE GIRLS - SPICE UP YOUR LIFE

This is the Original Girl Power Group and I really love this group! Any girl can relate to them as they represent five different personas. The group is composed of Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice).

Geri Halliwell left the band on 1998 to pusue a solo career. Two of the members got pregnant a year after. All of them had their own solo albums and even went to acting. The Fab Five reunited last year for a world tour. I am still praying and hoping that they'll make it here in the Philippines.  My Top 5 Favorite Songs of theirs are Who do you think you are, Denying, Something Kinda Funny, Last Time Lover and Weekend Love.

ALL SAINTS - LADY MARMALADE

- All Saints are no saints at all LOL. The group is composed of four members namely Melanie Blatt, Shazney Lewis, Natalie and Nicole Appleton. Their music is a mix of pop and RnB and the best thing about this band is that their voices really blend and they write their own songs. My Top Favorite Songs are Bootie Call, Lady Marmalade, Black Coffee, All Hooked Up and of course, Never Ever. 

TLC - UNPRETTY

The TLC Trio is composed of T-Boz, Chilli and Left Eye (RIP). TLC's Fanmail album really helped me a lot during the tough times when I was twelve. My Dad went to Rehab, I felt oh-so-down when my rank in school dropped down from 5 to 9 and that made me really depressed. A day after I was rushed to the hospital and had an operation in my appendectomy. I also had a lot of insecurities back then. My Top 5 Favorite Songs are Unpretty, I Miss You So Much, Dear Lie, Damaged and Waterfalls.

ATOMIC KITTEN - RIGHT NOW

The group Atomic Kitten appeared in the scene by 1999 and took Asia by storm. The Original members include Natalie, Liz and Kerry. After the first album, Kerry got pregnant and decided to leave the group. Jenny Frost replaced her. My Top 5 Favorite Song of theirs include Cradle, Whole Again, Right Now, Ladies Night and The Tide is High. 

B*WITCHED - ROLLER COASTER

 B*Witched is an irish band composed of Sinead, Lindsay and twins Edele and Keavy. They are best known for their tomboyish and teeny-boppish clothes and dance steps. I actually have a copy of their debut album and it is still very much alive here at home Too bad they were dropped by their recording company in 2000. My Top 5 Favorite songs include Blame it on the Weatherman, Roller Coaster, To You I Belong, Jesse Hold on and C'est La Vie.
